We found a sleeping god
Sunbathing by the rotting mill
Head nowhere to be found
Hands burlapped in the foxglove fields
In a cloak of moss and humming wasps and loam
Owlets cradled between her halved breastbone
We found a sleeping god
Full of life despite her skin gone cold

Is it carved in my heartlines?
A prophecy to be an offering to a higher power
That higher power
Was this body ever mine?
Or a decorated shrine beneath a higher powеr?
That higher power

We found a sleeping god
Hеr freckles looked like mine, at least what remained
They painted a constellation of my fate
But coyotes chewed off how it ends

A thousand holes I dug to find her head
For lips to speak to beyond those clung to her breasts
We found a sleeping god
Bones sinking deeper into the green
But who was she?

He always circles back around
The many-skinned one, to come eat me alive
So at arm’s length I hold, you, love
Waiting for him, always terrified

To find myself your sleeping god
All that I’m foretold to be
Not your wife, not a mother, but humus, a nest
A benign idol altarpiece
To feed a far more divine being

As a girl I made a vow to claw against inevitability
But the ground’s an open mouth
The starlit sky’s all glistening teeth
And my feet walk me toward the jaw
Of an essence that’s larger than me
There’s always something larger than me
It’s always something larger than me

A crater turned by sleeping god
Is my bed beneath the apple tree
We found a sleeping god
And I saw everything
