I wish I could change destiny
And return to my ranch where I was born
I wish I could breathe that aroma again
The burning firewood, the natural perfume of my mistress
And that smell of the mountains, I wish, I wish

That's what happened to me, I come from a humble family
Yes, a hard worker
But I barely had enough for the bread and beans in the pot
That's how the adventure of that American dream began
Where to survive I paid a lot
I had to leave my family behind
Many years ago

I don't even remember the color of that house
Where I watched my mother walk barefoot
I miss my grandmother's scolding
When I came home all dirty from school
I couldn't say goodbye nor did she give me her blessing before arriving with God

And how it hurts not to be able to be with them
And promise them that I'll return in the new year
It's not easy being an undocumented person
Now in the ID they even changed my name
They buried my past
Although I'm free here I feel like a prisoner
How I wish I want to go back, but I can't

There is pain, and don't cry, Montez!

I don't even remember the color of that house
Where I watched my mother walk barefoot
I miss my grandmother's scolding
When I came home from school all dirty
I couldn't say goodbye, nor did she give me her blessing before arriving with God

And how it hurts not to be able to be with them

And promise them that I'll return in the new year
It's not easy to be undocumented
Now in the ID they even changed my name
They buried my past
Although I'm free here I feel like a prisoner
How I would like to go back, but I can't
