Lay me down on the hillside, cover up my eyes
I don’t want to see another shepherd lurking in disguise
Ladies flock back to the slaughter with sugar-coated lies
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my eyes
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up ears
I don’t wanna hear the choir pray upon our deepest fears
Oh, the preachers drink from cisterns loaded full of fallen tears
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my ears
Lay me down on the hillside
Lay me down and walk away
Leave no roses on my headstone
Leave no footprints in the clay
Just lay me down and walk away
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my mouth
So I can’t tell the truth beyond the shadow of a doubt
I don’t want to make a promise just to fail to keep my vows
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my mouth
Lay me down on the hillside
Lay me down and walk away
Leave no roses on my headstone
Leave no footprints in the clay
Just lay me down and walk away
Lay me down on the hillside, turn away your face
And leave no post or marker just to sanctify this place
Raise nothing in my honor, it wasn’t worth the waste
+
Lay me down on the hillside, turn away your face
Lay me down on the hillside
Lay me down and walk away
Leave no roses on my headstone
Leave no footprints in the clay
Lay me down on the hillside
I don’t wanna meet this way
Let me lay there in the darkness
You know that’s where I wanna stay
Just lay me down and walk away
